Guided tours

For those who are interested in, some guided tours have been organised for Saturday 20th March to the following destinations:

Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno (VV) | Monastery of Soriano Calabro
This isolated hermitage is situated in Calabria on the Serra, the mountain ridge to the north of Aspromonte, three hundred feet above the town of Serra San Bruno. The original building was an example of Gothic architecture, but its structure was modified at the end of the sixteenth century and it was reconstructed for the third time after the earthquake of 1783.
A painting which depicts San Francesco di Paola, probably made by Luca Giordano, a silver reliquary of the 16thcentury, as well as several marble sculptures of the 19thcentury can be seen inside the church.

Codex Purpureus Rossanensis | Rossano Calabro
The Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, dating between the late 5th and early 6th century AD, is a Greek miniated gospel certainly composed in the Middle East (Syria or Palestine or almost certainly in Antakya on the Orontes). The Code reaches Rossano between the 9th and the 10th century, perhaps led by a monk fleeing from the Middle East, and it is considered the best example of Greek miniated codes ever.
The name "Purpureus" derives from the purple parchment used and the purple parchments were, indeed, used in the Byzantine world only for the most precious document.

Riace Bronzes | Reggio Calabria
The Bronzi di Riace are two famous full-size Greek bronzes of nude bearded warriors, and represent the most sensational discovery of marine archaeology of the last century. Since the National Museum of Reggio Calabria is closed during restorations, the Riace Bronzes can be seen at Palazzo Campanella in Reggio Calabria.
Found in August 1972 in Riace Marina, they underwent an initial intervention in Reggio Calabria, which was continued at the "Center for Archaeological Restoration" of the Archaeological Superintendence of Florence and ended in1980. They are undergoing a new restoration. The two statues are showed in air-conditioned rooms and they stand on special aseismatic basis.
